The Banded Demoiselles of Utrecht city

The damselfly whisperer
The damselfly whisperer
On one of the days I was photographing along the Zwartewater canal, this female chose my hand as a lookout for her hunt. First she sat on the knuckles of my hand, but when I carefully raised my finger, she crept to the highest point. She made a couple of hunting flights and returned every time.

With the camera in my other hand I tried to get an open spot of sky as background. That was fine with her, on one condition: her head should point to the sun.

Another female on the hunt. It looks like she plays hide-and-seek with me, but she sat like this before I arrived. Again with her head towards the sun. Hide-and-seek?
Hide-and-seek?

This photo shows how a direction of light leads to different colors. Part of her body isn't green, but orange.
Banded Demoiselles are fast and agile. But not invulnerable as is shown here. And so it ends....
And so it ends, caught in a spider web.

This is not a Banded Demoiselle, but a relative: the Beautiful Demoiselle and then the Southern subspecies (Calopteryx virgo meridionalis). This photo is taken in Northern Spain.
